The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The chart compares the proportion of house owning and renting of British and Welsh people from 1918 to 2011.

It is clear, in general, that while renting accommodation was more popular than homeownership in the first fifty-three years of the period, the opposite picture can be seen in the years after 1971. Moreover, the number of people who bought a house followed an increasing trend; meanwhile, that of people renting home witnessed a decrease direction.

To be more precise, in 1981, nearly eight out of ten British and Welsh people lived in rented houses compared with just over 20% of those who owned homes. In the following years, the percentage of property owners felt gradual, but it was still far higher than the homeownership rate which went up significantly to 50% in 1971. Strikingly, only in 1971 was there is no difference between the numbers of owning and renting accommodation.

From 1971, most of the British and Welsh people had owned accommodation, and the rate of homeownership was by far more substantial than that of household in rented houses. For instance, rising rapidly from 50 in 1971 to a peak of 70 after 30 years, the proposition of accommodation owners went down slightly to just over 60% in 2011. On the other hand, after a noticeable fall to the lowest point of approximately 30%, the percentage of household who rented accommodation recovered relatively to nearly 40% at the end of the period.
