The bar chart compares proportions of households owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.From the data supplied, it is conspicuous that owners showed a steady, but generally rose dramatically over the period, while percentage of rented households saw a significant decrease.
The amount of tenants was about 77% (that was the highest per cent throughout the period) in 1918, being higher than owners by nearly 60%. It decreased to approximately 68% in 1939 and remained the same until 1953. In the mid way of both trends, the year 1971 equalized the percentage to 50% for both types of accommodation. Then percentage of leased households continued falling moderately until 2001, followed by a slight increase to 35% in the end of the period. Meanwhile, proportion of owned dwellings was 20% in 1918, rising to around 31% in 1939. After increasing slightly, it remained stable and again went up dramatically to under 70% in 1991. In 2001, The number of acquired accommodations were higher than rented households by 40%. Since then, owned households saw a marginal decline to 63% over the period.
