The first bar graph illustrates the number of marital union and divorces in the USA from 1970 to 2000. The second chart gives information about the civil status of American adults in 1970 and 2000.

Overall, the number of marriages in the United States is steadily declining over the given period. Similarly, the number of couples divorcing was also going down but with some fluctuation. In comparison, there were more married couple in 1970 than in 2000. In contrast, there were more divorce and single individuals in 2000 than in 1970. However, the number of widowed American remained the same.

The number of people who got married in 1970 was about 2.5 million. The same number of marriages was the same in 1980 but by 1990 it started to decline and by 2000 it hits its lowest at 2 million. Similarly, the number of people getting a divorce was at 1 million in 1970. It rose up to about 1.5 million in 1980 but progressively decline in 1990 and by 2000, the number went down to 1 million.

In comparing marital status, the percentage of married American were at 70% of American in 1970 but went down to 60% in 2000. In contrast, the divorce rate was at about 2% in 1970 then rose to 10% in 2000. Likewise, single individuals were at 15% in 1970 then went up to 20% in 2000. The percentage of widowed Americans remained almost constant at approximately 10%.
