The charts below show the growth in the population in some of the world’s largest cities as well as the population distribution in urban and rural areas.

The diagrams illustrate the growing number of people living in several largest cities in the world and the distribution of people resided in rural areas and urban areas.

Overall, there was an upward trend in the number of populations in the cities, and in 2010, the top-five most populated cities in the world changed. Also, the number of people inhabiting the urban area increased gradually in the meantime.

In the meantime, India and Jakarta witnessed a dramatic change in the number of citizens. In 1970, the number of people living in Bombay was approximately 5 million, increasing by 5-times higher in the next three-decade. Jakarta was initially having around 2.5 million residents and it rose to about 18 million in the final year. Both Shanghai and Tokyo experienced a moderate increase in the number of population, it showed approximately 8-10 million change in 2010, while the number of people inhabited in new york saw a slight difference during the period.

The table shows that the most crowded city in 1950 was New York with 12,5 million people, followed by London at 7,9 million residents. The remaining cities were inhibited by 5 million citizens each. However, 50-year latter, all the top-5 most populated cities changed except for Tokyo moving to the first place with the increase of population by 3 times higher. All the new entry cities were occupied by more 20 million people.

In 1980, 3 billion people inhabited in the rural areas and this figure slightly changed in the next three-decade. In contrast, the urban’ population increased gradually and ending the period at around 4 billion.
