The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010.

The pie charts illustrate the proportion of students of one particular English university that had learnt another language other than English both in the years 2000 and 2010.

Overall, it is clear from both charts that only about a third of the students were not able to speak another language. While in the first year Spanish was the most common second language, the proportion of people whose second language was French was higher than those who spoke Spanish.

In 2000, nearly one-third of the students did not know another language apart from English, in comparison with a tenth who could speak two in addition to English. Considering just those who spoke one more language, Spanish was the most popular second language, as 20% of the students knew how to speak it, while 15% could speak French, and only 10% spoke German.

Turning to 2010, just above one in three students could not speak another language, whereas the proportion of students capable of speaking two other languages had grown to 15%. The figures for those who could speak French had also risen to a fifth, as opposed to those for Spanish which had declined to 10%. The percentage of students that spoke both German and another unspecified language was also 10%.
