The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2 emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

The line graph illustrates how much carbon dioxide was emitted per person in four European countries from 1967 to 2007.

Overall, Italy was the most environmentally friendly country over the whole period, as opposed to the UK that showed the highest levels of CO2 emitted to the atmosphere. CO2 emissions in Italy and Portugal rose gradually over the period, whereas they declined in the UK and Sweden.

In 1967, CO2 emissions in the UK amounted to more than 10 metric tonnes, in comparison with over 8 in Sweden, just above 4 in Portugal, and slightly under 2 in Italy. By the half of the period, figures for Italy and Portugal had climbed steadily to roughly 3 metric tonnes and around 7, respectively. Meanwhile, the UK had lowered its emissions by about 1 metric tonne, and those of Sweden peaked at just over 10 before falling significantly to about 7.

In the second half of the period, UK CO2 emissions dipped gradually to just below 7 tonnes in 2007, while in Sweden they kept falling to slightly under 6. In contrast, Italian and Portuguese CO2 emissions continued growing and reached figures of nearly 8 tonnes and slightly under 6.
