The bar chart enumerates the reasons why US residents traveled and the pie chart gives information about the main problems they encountered in the year 2009. At the first glance, it is conspicuous that commuting to and from work was the primary reason why Americans traveled in 2009 whereas the cost of traveling was the major issue Americans were most concerned about in the same year.
The bar chart, if closely examined, shows that the purpose of commuting made up nearly a half of all trips made by Americans in 2009. It was followed by unspecific “personal reasons” and shopping, accounting for 19% and 16% respectively. By contrast, trips for social or recreation reasons and visiting friends or relatives constituted an insignificant proportion of all travel, accounting for 16% combined. Only one in ten people made a journey for the former reason while trips for visiting friends or relatives accounted for the remaining 6%.
Looking more closely at the pie chart, we can see that the travel budget was of paramount importance to 36% of American travelers. Almost one in five people regarded safety as their foremost travel concern, whereas aggressive drivers and highway congestion were cited as another two major problems for 17% and 14 % of the US travelers. Finally, only a small proportion of those surveyed thought that access to public transport or space for pedestrians were the most important travel issues, at around 8% and 6% respectively.
