The two pie charts show the structure of the energy consumption, as well as the greenhouse gas emissions for Australian household, based on the six areas of the energy usage.

Overall, it is noticeable that the largest amount of the energy in a household is consumed for the purpose of heating, whether it is living space or water. Additionally, significant discrepancy is noticeable between the relative contribution of the certain areas of the energy usage in the total household energy consumption and in the greenhouse gas emissions.

Water heating is responsible for 30% of total domestic energy consumption in Australia, and its contribution in the greenhouse gas emissions is roughly the same at 32%. Cooling, has the smallest relative contribution in both statistics, nevertheless its proportion is on the similar level in both data sets.

The most significant energy consumer in the average Australian home is heating, with 42% of the total consumption. However this area is responsible for just 15% of the greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, refrigeration, other appliances and lighting, use 7%, 15% and 4% of the total energy respectively, while at the same time they have roughly two times larger share in the domestic greenhouse gas emissions than in the firstly mentioned metric, or 14%, 28% and 8% respectively.
