The given graph compares how much energy was generated from three different sources to provide New York with electricity from 1980 to 2000.
Overall, the amount of electricity created from coal decreased while the figures for natural gas and petroleum increased. Throughout the period, petroleum played the most important role in generating electricity for New York.
In 1980, petroleum was the main source of electricity for New York, generating about 360 million KWH of electricity. Followed by coal – from which over 200 million KWH of electricity was manufactured. That nearly 100 million KWH of electricity was created from coal made it the least preferred source of electricity production in this year.
The production of electricity from petroleum continuously increased in the following 5 years, to 600 million KWH in 1985. This figure then fell down to around 370 million KWH in 1990 before rose significantly to a peak of 740 million KWH in 2000. The amount of electricity from coal witnessed a slight increase to 300 million KWH in 1985 before constantly declined in the other years while electricity manufacturing from natural gas steadily grew during the whole period, overtook coal in 1990 and reached over 500 million KWH in 2000.
