Overall, all types of activity followed an upward trend. They were also seen with fluctuations, except for hiking
In 1980s, only 20% of old people went hiking, however, this portion then experienced a consistent surge, overtaking the first position of watching television and peaked at 80% in 2010s. From 1980s to 2000s, both watching TV and surfing the Internet witnessed a gradual rise of about 10% to 70% and 15%, respectively. Nonetheless, while the figure for TV dropped slightly to about 65% in the final decade, that of browsing the web soared up to 50%.
Theatre was a free time activity chosen by half of the elderly people living in the USA, which was 20% more than that of reading in 1980s. However, these people then lost interest in the theatre when its percentage declined significantly to only 30% in 1990s, as opposed to reading, which saw a 40% growth in the same period. Afterwards, while theatre was seen with a steady rise to 45%, reading rocketed to 60% in 2010s after a 20% decrease
