The bar chart illustrates a comparison on number of trips made by children (age 5-12 years old) to school in the years 1990 and 2010. In addition, the graph shows details on the different media of transportation used by children to commute between their home and school. Units for the number of trips is illustrated in millions per year.
It can be observed that, in the year 1990, above 12 million trips made by the children are by feet, whereas in the year 2010, majority used cars to reach school and back home (around 11 million trips per year) and the least number of trips being those made by cycles ( exactly 2 millions per year). Only less than half percentage of trips used cars for transportation in the year 1990 in comparison to those in the year 2010.
The number of trips made by using cycles and those included walking as well as travelling in buses remained almost same in the year 2010. However, the number of trips made using bus alone as a medium is a million more than those included walking and hiring bus. In the year 1990, the number of trips made by children using cycle as a medium to commute is less than a quarter when compared to the cycle trips in 2010.
