The line graph shows the proportion of elderly people aged 65 and over in three countries over a period of a century (1940 to 2040).

It is evident that the population of elderly people increases in these three countries. Japan is expected to experience the most dramatic changes in its population of elderly people.

In 1940, there were about 10% of elderly people in America, compares to about 7% and 5% respectively in Sweden and Japan. It is interesting to note that the population of people who are 65 or older in Japan remained below 5% until 2000. By contrast, the population of elderly people in Sweden and the USA rose gradually to about 15% in 2000.

Looking into the future, Japan will experience a significant increase in its population of elderly people, it is estimated that there will be about 27% by the end of the period. Sweden and USA will also increase slightly to about 25% and 23% in 2040 respectively.
