The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries. summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words.

Given is a line graph which illustrates the amount of the elderly population in a century from 1940 to 2040 in three different countries.
A glance at this graph depicts that all three lines have a growing trend during this period, which means the population is getting older in these countries.
At 1940 nearly ten percent of USA population aged more than 65 years old. Meanwhile, in Japan old people contained only 5% of population and in Sweden this amount was a little higher than Japan.
It is clear that over the next 60 years the number of elderly citizens in Japan showed a slight decline, when around year 2000 it started to rise and got to 10%. A few years later it dramatically rose to more than 25%.
We can also observe that the proportion of the population aged 65 or over in USA and Sweden fluctuated over this given century. However, at first the percentage of over aged population in USA was higher than this amount in Sweden, as we can see in this graph, in the 1990’s the population in Sweden got older and the line which depicts Sweden old population took over USA’s and continued to rise to more than 25% at 2040.
