The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words.

The line graph illustrates and compares the elderly ratio of three nations in three different continent. Giving a demonstration in a period of a century, this graph is also features a short-term prediction.

The overall trends demonstrate an increasing rate over a century. Although Japan had the lowest proportion of elderly people, this country will have the highest proportion among the other specified nations.

In 1940, the people aged 65 and above formed below 10% of the total population in their own country. This ratios were about 9, 7 and 5% for USA, Sweden and Japan, respectively. This trend remained the same until 1996, where Sweden overtook USA, achieving the highest proportion of elderly people among the other two. From 1996 until now, Sweden had the highest fraction of the aged people. Until 2028, a steady trend will govern the proportion.

Based on the prediction, we expect to observe an abrupt and sharp increase in the Japan’s proportion between 2028 and 2033, where its trends will overtake the USA’s in 2030 and Sweden’s in 2033, achieving the first place among the country with the highest proportion of elderly people among the other two and keep it until 2040.
