The line graph illustrates the number of goods which were delivered by 4 different means of transport namely road, water, rail, and pipeline in Britain over a period of 28 years between 1974 and 2002.
Overall, it is clear that road was the most popular way to transport goods; whereas pipeline was the least popular one. Units are measured in million tonnes.
In 1974, only about 5 million tonnes of products were transported by pipeline compared to nearly 70 million tonnes delivered by road. The figure for road transportation then increased gradually and reached approximately 100 million tonnes in 2002 despite a small drop of around 2 million tonnes in 1996. Meanwhile, the number of goods which was carried by pipeline only witnessed a slight increase of 19 million tonnes throughout the period surveyed.
Both water and rail carried the same amount of freight during the first 4 years, 40 million tonnes. Then the former rose dramatically to 60 million tonnes in the middle years and fell to 50 million tonnes in 1998 before surging up to around 60 million tonnes in the end. However, the latter experienced a fluctuation of under 40 million tonnes during the time shown and finally reached the same amount of freight as in 1974 in the final year.
