The pie charts illustrate the proportion of water used for three industrial, agricultural and domestic purposes in six areas of the world.
The highest proportion of water for industrial purposes is used in Europe (53%) followed by North America (48%), South East Asia (12%), South America (10%) Africa (7%) and Central Asia (5%). Furthermore, the highest proportion of 19% for domestic purposes is used in South America whereas North America and Europe account for 13% and 15% of the total usage. Africa, Central Asia and South East Asia utilize fairly equal proportions (7-9%) of water for domestic purposes.
However, among three different purposes, agriculture accounts for the highest proportion from the total except in North America and Europe. Africa, Central Asia and South East Asia utilize 81-88% of the available water for agricultural purposes.
Overall, most of the tropical countries utilize the available water for agriculture while temperate countries prioritize the usage of available water for industrial purposes.
