Marriages in America
The first bar chart gives information about the number of marriages and divorces in US throughout 30 years, beginning in 1970. The second graph illustrates the marital status of mature citizens in America between 1970 and 2000.
Overall, it could be seen from the first chart that number of marriages gradually declined while divorces fluctuated and remained relatively stable over a period of 30 years. Simultaneously, the proportion of adults who got married was the highest in four marital status investigated and this number slightly fell down from 1970 to 2000.
In 1970, there was 2,5 million of marriages compared to 1 million of divorces. The number of marriages remained stable in 1980 then steadily went down to about 2,3 million in 1990 and 2 million in 2000. Meanwhile, divorces cases considerably increased to almost 1,5 million in 1980 then dropped to over 1 million in 1980 and went back to 1 million in 2000.
The marital status of American was surveyed in four different types in which the percentage of married people was the highest of precisely 70% in 1970, then moderately dipped to 60% in 2000. Came in the second place was the ratio of people who never married with about 15% in 1970, this number slightly went up to 20% in 2000. The maximum proportion of widows and divorces were relatively similar with almost 10% and 4% in 1970, respectively then in 2000, the number of widows slightly fell down to about 6% whilst divorces significantly rose up to nearly 10%.
