The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these

causes affected three regions of the world during the 1990s.

The pie chart and table depict the dominant causes of land degradation in the worldwide and three specific regions respectively.

Overall, it can be seen that 'over-grazing' was the paramount determinant of the global land degradation, while Europe was the number one region that was truly liable for the degradation.

In terms of universal land degradation, 'over-grazing' stood at approximately a third (35%) of the total, compared to 'other' at 7%, which was the least aetiology of all. Second in the rank was 'deforestation' at 30%, just ahead of 'over-cultivation' at 28%.

Turning to specific territories, almost one-tenth (9.8%) of the land degradation in Europe was caused by 'deforestation', whereas the logging rate for North America was almost nil (0.2%). Next, Europe was slightly higher than North America in both 'over-cultivating' (7.7% vs 3.3%) and 'over-grazing' (5.5% vs 1.5%) accordingly. In terms of Oceania, 'deforestation' (1.7%) and 'over-cultivation' (0%) were marginal as opposed to the rest. Europe headed the list, followed by Oceania and the bottom rank by North America with 23% vs 13% vs 5% correspondingly when it came to the net land degradation.
