The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world in the 1990s.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The pie chart illustrates why land on the global scale experierences degradation while the table indicates the percentage of degraded land affected by 3 main reasons, categorised in 3 continents.

Overall, three main causes leading to degradation are identified as gazing, cultivation and deforestation, in which gazing seems to be slightly more popular. It is also worth pointing out that European land suffers most from the three culprits.

To begin with, 35% of land in the world is degraded due to gazing excessively, taking up the greatest share. Furthermore, it is reported that degraded land caused by destroying forest accounts for almost a third of the total proportion, which is slightly higher than the figure for over-cultivation. Apart from the aforementioned causes, it is recorded that only 7% of worldwide land is destroyed because of other factors.

Turning to the given table, North America was reported to witness less impact from the three causes with only 5% of land in this continent is degraded. In addition, 23% of land in Europe was degraded, in which the main reason was deforesting activities with nearly 10%. Moreover, over-gazing was recorded as the major cause, leading to degradation with the percentage reported at 11.3% out of 13% of degraded land in Oceania. However, it is notable that deforestating and cultivating activities nearly brought none impacts in causing degradation.
