The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and report the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The maps illustrate the changes which have taken place in Grand Park from its opening in 1920 to today.
Overall, it is clear that the public park has experienced a variety of significant transformations in terms of recreational facitities and landscape areas with the exception of a rose garden in the northwest and the two main entrances which have remained unchanged.
In the north east of the park, there used to be a rose garden and a pond for water plants, but they have been substituted by a café and a children’s playground. Similarly, the glasshouse situated in the south east has been converted into a water feature. Another interesting development has been the introduction of an underground car park which is accessed through an entrance in the east where seats were put for relaxation.
The fountain located in the heart of the park has been knocked down to make way for a large square rose garden. Around the four sides of this new garden are rows of seats which used to be placed at different corners of the park. Also, the stage reserved for musicians to the left hand-side of the garden has been turned into a semicircular amphitheater for concerts. By contrast, both of the entrances to the north from Arnold avenue and to the south from Eldon street as well as the rose garden in the north west have stayed untouched.
