The table chart compares five different countries, namely USA, China, UK, Australia and India in terms of the proportion of literacy and employment between 1990 and 2010.
In general, there was a considerable increase in the percentage of literate people in different countries over the period shown. In addition, the proportion of employees in USA and India saw the most dramatic growth from 1990 to 2010.
The most dramatically rise in literate population was seen in China. The percentage of literacy in China was the lowest in the 1990s, at 42%, whereas the figure for China was over 90% in the 2010s. By contrast, USA witnessed the lowest rate of increase in literacy from 1990 to 2010 was only around 20%. The proportion of Australian who could read and write was the highest in the 2010s, which went up from 49% in the 1990s to 95% in the 2010s. UK and India were similar, which rose by around 30% during this period.
Throughout the period shown, the percentage of workers in USA, India and Australia experienced an upward trend, while the figure for China and UK saw a downward trend. Both the figure for employment in USA and India went up rapidly by 40% from 1990 to 2010 compare with the percentage of Australian workers increased minimally by 2% over the same period. The proportion for UK was the highest employment in the 1990s, which stood at almost 80%, after falling to 60% in the 2010s. The figure for Chinese employees declined slightly by about 5% over the period shown.
