The table shows the proportions of pupils attending four secondary school types between 2000 and 2009.

The table shows data on attendees of four types of secondary school from 2000 to 2009.
Overall, while three school types such as specialist, grammar and voluntary-controlled all saw a decrease in the proportions of pupils, community schools’ attendees had the most drastic increase over 9 years compared to the others. Moreover, there was a replacement of the first rank from voluntary-controlled to community schools between 2000 and 2009.
In 2000, voluntary-controlled was the most attended school type with over 50%, nearly four times more than that of specialist and community schools (12%). The second largest attended school type belonged to grammar with just under a quarter.
From 2001 to 2009, whilst specialist and grammar schools’ attendees dropped gradually, the remaining school types both changed significantly. Despite a slight fall to 38% in 2005, voluntary-controlled schools still remained at the top. However, the proportion of pupils in this type of school halved after 4 years and slipped to the second spot. An opposite pattern can be seen in community school type, from a second rank in 2005 to the top with a surge in the number of attendees after 4 years from 32% to 58%
