The pie graph illustrates the online usage of the variety of languages, while the table gives information about the number of people online compared to the world population on a yearly basis from November 1997 to August 2001. Overall, it is noticeable that English was the dominating language and online usage was exponentially increased over the whole period.
According to the pie chart, online users were 529 million in total in December 2001, and 43% of them preferred to use English which accounted for more than two fifths. Every other language that was listed on the pie graph were shared less than 9% which are with a decreasing order, Japanese, Chinese, German, Spanish, Korean, Italian, French, Portuguese and Dutch. The other unlisted languages altogether accounted for almost 10%.
The number of people who used online was 76 million in November 1997 and accounted for 1,8% of the world population. These figures were doubled in September 1998 and reached 147 million and 3,6%, respectively. This upward trend continued over the following three years and the online user numbers rose to 513 million and the rate reached 8,4% in August 2001.
