Some people think that everyone has the right to have access to university education, and that government should make it free for all students no matter what financial background they have. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Some people believe that everybody has a right to attend tertiary education regardless of any difference in their socio-economic background. However, I would argue that abolishing tuition fees might be counterproductive for student performance. By contrast, student loans and scholarships seem to be infinitely better alternatives to make universities more accessible to the masses.

There is a primary reason why free tuition can negatively affect students. As most undergraduates have to pay for their schooling, they are more likely to take each course seriously and apply themselves to get high scores. If they do not need to meet their financial obligations, they may neglect their studies and lose the motivation to learn. For instance, many students decide to skip classes or do not take exams since failing exams costs no money. These behaviors clearly lead to deteriorating performance; as a result, students would gain no benefits from their studies.

Instead of using state funds to cover university tuition fees, governments could entitle students who can not afford tuition to get low-interest loans. These loans would incentivize them to study harder as studying is of paramount importance to get a well-paid job, which in turn helps them to pay off their debts. Furthermore, merit-based scholarships should be awarded to individuals who excel at school. The recipients of financial aid will have to do their utmost to maintain top performance because if their grades start deteriorating, institutions could cut off funding.

In conclusion, I am convinced that governments should not subsidize colleges to make it free for all because of the above reasons. Instead, student loans and scholarships are feasible solutions making college more affordable while ensuring great student performance.
