34 - Integrated: Why did the sea cows in Siberia become extinct?

The lecturer disputes the author's suggested theories about how sea cows got extinct. He provides several reason to cast doubt about the author's claims.

first, according to the author, sea cows got extinct because of over hunting by the Native Siberians. The lecturer find this idea debatable, He asserts that sea cows were massive animals with 9 meters long and 10 Tons in weight. Native Siberians may have hunted this animal to feed on it. However, why should they hunt such a huge animal when they could be satisfied with smaller size animals to feed on them.

Second, the lecturer contradicts the fallacy of the passage that a change in ecosystem have cause a decline in Kelp which is a valuable food source for sea cows. He contends that it is unlikely that this was the reason for their extinction because other animals like whales which also feed on kelp have not decrease in number.Theoretically speaking , this scenario may have happened if whales got extinct as well.
Finally, the author claims that European traders may have hunted those animals because they want to sell their fur. Again, the lecturer refutes this claim by stating that this might have happened if these animals existed in big numbers. However, the data shows that sea cows were already few in number before the European arrived to this region Thus, it is most likely that some other reasons could have caused this problem,.
