agnostids
The reading and the lecture both are about the agnostids. The author of the reading provides near possibilities about agnostids and the way they lived. The lecturer challenges all the claims made by the author and illustrates them in the subsequent paragraphs.
Firstly, the author mentions that the agnostids are free-swimming predators because primitive arthropods were strong swimmers and predators. They thought the same with the agnostids, as they were primitive arthropods relatives. However, the tutor argues that the predators usually have large well-developed eyes, but in the case of agnostids some have tiny developed eyes and some were blind. Additionally, she says that in order to have predator quality, it should have special sensory organs to locate prey. since those special organs are not found in relation to the agnostids. This clearly shows that they are not predators.
Secondly, the writer mentions that the agnostids may have dwelled on the seafloor because of primitive arthropods were living that way. On top of it, the passage mentions that they might have survived by scavenging dead organisms or bacteria. The professor refutes this by saying that the sea swelling organisms will move slowly on the seafloor and stay in a localised area. Moreover, they occur in a small geographic location and no where they can be found. On the other hand, the agnostids were spread over larger distances and also moved very fast. The seafloor dwelling organisms moving fast is unusual. This information proves that the agnostids were not sea-dwelling organisms.
Finally, the article posits that the agnostids were parasites and used to feed on larger organisms. This thought is bought because many arthropods of modern-day exist as parasites. On the contrary, the academician tells that parasite populations have to stay in certain limits on larger animals because there might be a chance of killing them if they feed on too much. Though, populations of agnostids were large so that they cannot fit into the category of parasites. By this feature, we came to know that the agnostids are not parasites.
