agnostids behaviors

Essay topics:

agnostids behaviors

The passage presents possible theories of how agnostids-a type of marine animal that have been extinct since 450 million years ago-behavioral atributes of living. The lecturer disregards all of these theories and believes none of them are plausible. Her further demonstrations are as follows.

Firstly, the free-swimming predator populations of primitive arthropods have been proven to possess large and highly developed eyes which were used as the means to track prey. In contrast, there is evidence that agnostids had small poorly developed eyes. Besides, some of them were even blind. Additionally, there is no evidence in the fossils suggestive of other types of sensory tools present in agnostides. Without the required characteristics of a proficient predator, the hypothesis of this behavior in agnostids is not very convincing.

Secondly, the seafloor dweller populations usually consist of animals which cannot move fast and long, and therefore, are only present in a localized area in which they originated. The agnostids, however, had the ability to swim rapidly and for long distances, as there is fossil evidence of their presence in numerous areas. Hence, the theory of agnostids being seafloor dwellers is not very likely.

Finally, parasites often have to live in small populations, otherwise they can overrun and kill their host animal. On the contrary, agnostids remains in fossils demonstrates a great number of animals. This massive community is highly unlikely in parasites, and thus, the extensive population of agnostids refutes the argument that they could have been parasites.
