ancient people used vessels as batteries
Both the reading and the lecture are about the vessels that were found in Iraq. The author of the reading feels that there are three possible explanations for refusing the assertion that these vessels were not used as batteries in ancient times; however, The professor finds the idea dubious and casts doubt on the reasons proposed by the writer of the text.
To begin with, the author mentions that these vessels would need an electricity conductor, like a metal wire to be used as batteries, yet there is no evidence of such a thing. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He brings up the idea that these vessels were first found by the local people who were not archaeologists. Furthermore, he states that it is possible that they found other materials along with the vessels, but threw them away as they were not appealing for them.
Secondly, the author holds the view that the vessels might have been used to hold scrolls. As in the article, it is stated that the vessels exactly resembled the copper cylinders, which were found in the ruins of Seleucia and used to hold the sacred scrolls. In contrast, the speaker rebuts this hypothesis by underlying the fact that their resemblance would not prove anything, for it is of the likelihood that they were initially used for another reason. Additionally, he notes that maybe it was invented for another reason, but then used to produce electricity.
Finally, the writer of the reading passage posits that these vessels could not be batteries, as ancient people did not even have any device which would need electricity to work, as a result, in case the vessels were batteries, they would be considered as useless goods. On the contrary, the professor dismisses this idea due to the fact that electricity was like an invisible power and could cause a sense of tingling and make people feel as it is a magical power. Furthermore, he asserts that nowadays we use electricity to relieve pain and aches, consequently it is possible that the ancient doctors used them for the same reason.
