anting

Essay topics:

anting

Both the author and the lecturer discuss theories about the possible benefits that birds get from anting. The passage claims that there are some reasons that birds rub the ants on their feathers. The professor, on the other hand, completely reject whatever mentioned in the reading through citing three reasons.

First, both the author and the professor talk about the relief of skin irritation during feather change. According to the passage, the formic acid, which the birds apply to their feather and skin through anting, may act as a kind of lotion, helping to soothe the skin irritation caused by feather loss and replacement in summer. The lecturer, nevertheless, rejects the author's view and illustrates the idea that ants are more active in summer, so birds can find more ants during summer and the skin irritation is coincident with the abundance of ants.

Second of all, both the reading and the lecture discuss protection against parasites. The author argues that the formic acid helps the birds protect themselves from external parasites. However, the professor refutes this, saying that if the formic acid act as a chemical defense against parasites, we have to expect fewer parasites but we do not see any significant decline in amount of parasites.

Eventually, the passage and the lecture address the subject of food preparation. The passage goes on to mention that formic acid tastes bitter. If ants release their formic acid, the bitter taste is removed from ant's bodies and the birds can feed on the ants without tasting the bitterness. In contrast, the professor points out that the birds rub other things that are not suitable for eating such as cigarette and soup on their body but do not eat these things later. Therefore, bird's rubbing is not related to eating.
