R. Robustus is claimed to be not a hunter but a scavenger in the article, whereas the lecture claims the opposite. Both passages explain three different points that are contrasting each other regarding the mammal’s size, leg anatomy and the absence of teeth marks on its possible preys.
Firstly, the reading supports that R. Robustus could not have hunted psittacosaur dinosaur, whose pieces were found in its stomach, since R. Robustus is so small to hunt and eat such a dinosaur. But the lecture opposes this idea by saying that it could actually have eaten a baby dinosaur or another dinosaur similar to its size easily which would make the mammal a hunter.
The second point the reading makes is that the mammal’s legs are so short which are not centered but to the sides and makes it not possible for it to chase and catch a dinosaur. In the lecture, a contradicting example of Tasmanian Devil is given. It is explained that this animal also has short legs as well but can reach a speed of 15 km/h when chasing its prey and hence is an active predator, which means that having short legs is not a reason for not being a hunter.
The final point is about the absence of teeth marks on the remains of psittacosaur dinosaur in the mammal’s stomach. The article suggests that since there are no teeth marks, the mammal certainly could not have eaten the dinosaour alive. It may only have eaten its eggs as a scavenger. But in the lecture, there is again an explanation to support that this statement does not necessarily have to be valid. In the lecture, it is being claimed that the mammal R. Robustus has strong jaws to grab and hold its prey, so that it does not have to chew it with its teeth. The mammal just swallows the whole prey or eats it in big pieces so that it leaves no teeth marks.
As a result, the reading claims that R. Robustus is not a hunter due to its small size, short legs and absent teeth marks on the remains in its stomach; whereas the lecture opposes to all of these by explaining that a small size and short legs does not necessarily mean that the mammal cannot be a hunter and also there is a chance to hunt without leaving any teeth marks, so R. Robustus can actually be a hunter.
