Both the reading and the listening talked about R. robustus, an ancient dinosaur that lived about 150 million years ago. The author of the reading passage contends that the dinosaur was indeed a scavenger, rather than a hunter, and cites three possible reasons. However, in the lecture, the professor challenges the writer’s stance.
First of all, the reading passage asserts that R. robustus was a scavenger, egg eating animal, because it’s size was too small to possibly hunt other dinosaurs. The writer compared it’s size to a cat, which is pretty small. However, in the lecture, the professor calls into question this reason and contends that the dinosaur could actually hunt baby dinosaurs. According to the lecturer, the dinosaur was more than twice the size of baby dinosaurs which is definitely sufficient for the dinosaur to effectively hunt and eat other baby dinosaurs.
Secondly, the writer contends that the legs of R. robustus were too short and were situated not directly below, but to its sides. All this would make the hunting difficult because the dinosaur wouldn’t be able to run fast enough in order to catch its prey, the other dinosaurs. In contrast, the lecturer challenges this reasoning and says that having short legs isn’t that disadvantageous. She cites the example of Tasuman devil, another predator, which has small legs, but can achieve speeds upto 15km/hr and can successfully hunt down its prey.
Finally, the author of the passage asserts that there we no teeth marks on the bones of the dinosaur found inside the stomach of R. robustus, which should have been there if it indeed hunted other dinosaurs. Nevertheless, like the other two reasons, the professor also challenged this reason. The professor says that the author’s of the reading passage overlooks many pertinent, pivotal facts while arriving at this conclusion. According to the lecturer, the R. robustus used to swallow its prey, which justifies the absence of tooth maks.
