The cause of the extinction of sea cow
The reading passage is investigating the reason of sea cow's extinction, meanwhile the professor in the lecture is also discussing the same issue. However, what the professor states conflicts with the author's opinions and he utilizes three convincing arguments to verify that the author's theories are erroneous.
To start with, the author suggests that the sea cow became extinct owing to native Siberian people's overhunting. Nevertheless, the professor rebuts that since the population of native Siberian people was not large and the sea cow was a kind of massive creatures, therefore, a couple of sea cow could support Siberian people's lives for months. Consequently, Siberian people did not need to hunt a lot of sea cow for their survival.
What's more, despite the assertion in the reading passage that the ecosystems disturbances were probably the crucial factor that leads to the extinction of sea cow, the professor harbors the idea that, provided that there were environmental changes happening in 1769, other animals living in the identical area should have been affected by changes too. However, in accordance with the fishing ship record, the population of whales living in Bering Island did not suffer a decline, which indicates that the population of kelp should have grown finely without any disturbance and the sea cow did not experience the food shortage.
Finally, the author reckons that European fur traders are supposed to bear the responsibility of the extinction since all of them were equipped with weapons which enabled them to quickly hunt a large proportion of sea cow. Whereas the professor contends that the population of sea cow was already comparatively modest when European fur traders arrived at Bering Island, and the population of sea cow reached to the culmination hundreds of years before those traders' arrival, hence, those fur traders should not be put on blame for the extinction of sea cow.
In a nutshell, the professor explicitly points out the weaknesses existing in the statement of the reading passage and convincingly verifies that all three theories formulated in the passage are not authentic enough to explain the main cause of the extinction.
