comics
In the passage the writer states that comic books are inherently American and unique to American culture. That in it’s origins it comes from American only influences and that any other kind of comic related form of art stems from this source. The writer even provides historical proof of his point pointing at the first successful comic strip “Hogan’s Alley”, a 1980s comic strip featuring america’s middle class life problems in New York, the writer also mentions action comics that features the first super hero, superman, is also American-made.
While it’s indeed true what the writer mentions the speaker from the audio corrects the statement from the writer’s passage and makes the following declarations:
First, the first comic books ever made where British and Swedish and those were published in the 1970s.
Second, while Hogans Alley was indeed an American comic strip, it features the life of an inmigrant living in New York and how he struggles to get by in his new home. The speaker even mentions tintin (belgiums first successful comic) that is sixteen years older than action comics.
The speaker also corrects the writer when the former mentions that Japanese manga is heavily inspired by American comic books from WWII and points at traditional Japanese art as the principal inspiration to this derivation of comics.
Finally, the speaker also mentions Asterix an obelix, and the Disney European comics too. Çsaying that even though the comics from Europe are indeed influenced by American comics, they are drawn and even written in a very unique way that only can be found in the old continent. Thus, stating that comic books don’t belong only to the USA but to the whole world and all cultures.
