Eco certification and American wood companies (Integrated)Reading Section: In an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, an international organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological stan

The reading and listening passages here discuss the tendency of wood companies to get eco certification by an independent international organization. While the reading passage mentions that it is not likely for American wood companies to try to get this certification and states reasons, the professor in the listening passage refutes this claims by counteracting each of those reasons.

Firstly, the reading passage claims that American Consumers are already saturated with many advertising labels of the products and will not give importance to the eco certification as well. The professor directly contradicts this by mentioning that this eco-certification label is not like other labels since it is offered by an independent organization rather than the company itself and hence people have lot of confidence is such certifications. So it will be worthwhile for companies to get this.

Secondly, the professor points out that even though American consumers prefer products at a lower price, the decision to choose cheaper product over expensive one is however applicable mostly in the cases of large price differences and not in the cases of price difference less than five percent. The wood products in the discussion fall in this category since the certification will not increase the price any more than five percent. As a result, companies should indeed care about getting their products certified.

Finally, the professor mentions that American wood companies should indeed adapt to the global developments or else foreign companies may enter the national market and supplant the domestic companies in order to satisfy the consumers who are more ecologically driven.
