Egyptians discover the Americas

Essay topics:

Egyptians discover the Americas

Speaking of the first trailblazer to discover the Americas, many scholars, including the author of the article, suggest that it is in fact the Egyptians rather than Cristopher Columbus, and provide several pieces of evidence. Nevertheless, the professor in the lecture casts doubt on them for the following reasons.
To begin with, even though the reading passage cites nicotine traces discover in Egyptians’ hair as proof that Egyptians found tobacco, a common source of nicotine, in the Americas, the lecturer argues that it is a misconception. This is because nicotine was found long before the discovery of the Americas. In addition, the lecturer proposes that nicotine could derive from other tobacco-like plants in Egypt. Thereby, the lecturer dismisses the evidence of tobacco mentioned in the passage.
In the second place, the author claims that there seemed to have a small and faint print on the ancient Egyptian currency, bearing some resemblances to the location and the shape of the continent of the Americas. Conversely, the lecturer refutes this argument, indicating that this small print doesn’t overall represent the map but was only a simple print. As a result, the conclusion that Egyptians discovered the Americas first cannot be supported by this print.
Last but not least, the lecturer concurs with the author that the shapes of the pyramids in Egypt are similar to the form of the native Americans’ totems. Nonetheless, she claims that the function, purpose, and details of the pyramids probably embodied different meanings, significantly having nothing to do with totems. Accordingly, she concludes that the possibility that the Egyptians were the first ones to discover the Americas can be ruled out.
