electronic medical records

Essay topics:

electronic medical records

The reading passage and lecture are both regarding using electronic medical record. The writer states that there are benefits to electronic records. The lecturer casts doubt on them, implying that these advantages can’t be justified for the following reasons.
To begin with, even though the author suggests that it can reduce costs since there is no need for storing and copying papers, the lecturer argues that it is a misconception. This is because there might still be some doctors keep using papers for other purposes like emergency. Thereby, we can’t significantly save money by harnessing electronic records.
Secondly, according to the author, thanks to the standardization of forms, electronic records can prevent several human errors such as poor handwriting and improper transcription of data. Conversely, the professor believes that there are weaknesses in author’s position. She mentions that some doctors still document records with pen and paper and some medical staffs who are supposed to transport handwriting scripts to electronic data can make mistakes in identifying and interpreting doctor’s scripts. Accordingly, she disagrees with the author.
Last but not least, the author points out that electronic records can be conducive to medical research, which researchers can readily access to needed information in large amount of data collection. Nevertheless, the lecturer claims that researcher probably still have difficulty in acquiring records. Since there are strict law restricting people from gaining private information, people need to follow complicated procedures and obtain permission from patients to get medical records. As a result, the lecturer rules out this aiding advantage.
To summarize, both the writer and lecturer hold conflicting views about the advantages of electronic medical records.
