Essay topics:

n the United States, medical information about patients traditionally has been recorded and stored on paper forms. However, there are efforts to persuade doctors to adopt electronic medical record systems in which information about patients is stored in electronic databases rather than on paper. It is argued that storing patients' medical records in electronic databases has several advantages over traditional paper-based record keeping.

Based on the reading passage USA deiced to use electronic medical database over traditionally paper forms. Therefore, keeping this in perspective, author believe there are several advantages associated with this change. However, the professor cast-doubt on these reasons, suggesting three points, concerning why these advantages do not make sense.

The first point mentioned in the reading passage is, electronic data base record can help to reduce costs, whereas hospital do not need to keep paper records. This point is challenged in the lecture as, unlikely of this perspective, papers do not thrown away. The reading passage does not take into consideration that, this paper records would be saved for urgent situation. Therefore, the whole point regarding it would be priceless, is refuted in the lecture.

Although it was suggested in the reading that electronic medical records are vital to diminish medical errors. This point is rebutted in the lecture as, it would not eliminate the errors since most doctors still use pen and paper during clinical evaluations. Another point mentioned to question the validity of this claim is, after a while from clinical evaluation, recorders save data on computers and if some doctors have poor hand writing the error is inevitable. Hence, this fact that electronical record prevent from errors cannot hold true.

The author in the reading passage assert that electronic medical records can greatly help medical research by making it possible to gather large amounts of data from patient records. This point is, further, come into question in the lecture on the grands that researches have a really difficult access to database. In fact, the reading fails to consider the fact that, collecting data from patient documents need a chain of permission even from patient due to high level of privacy and sometimes, some patient block access of anyone to their profiles. Thereby, the validity of this claim in the reading is also in question.
