Elephant behaviors

Essay topics:

Elephant behaviors

The reading passage explores several beliefs regarding elephant behaviors. As reasonable as these points seem, the professor in the lecturer casts doubt on them, implying that people have misinterpreted elephant behaviors.
To begin with, the author suggests that elephants will leave their herd to find places near water when they know that they are about to die. Furthermore, the author cites the elderly elephants’ bones discovered near the water as proof that elephants have such behavior. Conversely, disputing the author‘s argument, the lecturer claims that elderly elephants move near the water because there embody soft vegetations which they can consume with their worn tooth. Therefore, the lecturer rules out that elephants are aware of approaching death.
Second, even though the author proposes that elephants have an artistic ability they can represent recognizable things with a paintbrush, the lecturer argues that it is a misconception. This is because elephants are probably trained to paint. She mentions that we can often see human trainers stroke elephants’ sensitive ears to make them do tricks like drawing and to teach them to remember to draw certain patterns. Accordingly, the lecturer believes that elephants only paint lines that are been trained to paint, indicating that the patterns don’t necessarily represent artistic things.
Last but not least, the lecturer acutely identifies a weakness in the passage that elephants are fear of mice. Despite the experiment mentioned in the article showing that elephants backed away when they encountered mice, the lecturer points out that elephants have such behavior only because they are unfamiliar with mice. In addition, in an attempt to establish a more concrete explanation, she cites the elephants in the zoo where the mice are common as proof that once elephants are familiar with mice, they won’t react with fear to the mice. As a result, the lecturer thinks that there are misunderstandings of this behavior.
