The emperor Claudius of Rome is often portrayed as a viscious fool traditionally, but the passage argues this is because of his disagreements with the ancient authors, and further gives points to say he was one of the most important, innovative and wise emperors. The professor disagrees with the passage with some more points.
The professor says that eventhough some of his actions were innovative, the most innovative thing was how he came to power by paying off the military after the assassinatino of the previous emperor. Other who followed this trend later on ultimately led Rome into the Civil War. The professor says this can never be a trait of a good president.
The professor acknowledges that the emperor is considered to have strong judgement for some of his works, like expanding roman citizenship to new people, but points out that many of his actions were simply terrible and showed bad judgement. He gives examples of such actions, like conquering Britain just to win prestige, and encouraging violent gladiotor game where several died just to entertain the people of Rome. He says that the emperor wouldnt listen to both sides for taking decisions.
Th professor also criticises the emperor's actions that make him seem unwise. Eventhough it may seem wise to give opportunities to slaves and women and entrust them with high beaeaucratic positions, the professor points out that those slaves were mostly known for being corruupt, and had huge personal earnings in the cost of the city. The emperor's wives were also disloyal and his last wife even poisoned him. The professor finally argues that the Nero was a bad choice as the successor for the throne.
All these show the emperor's not-so-wise nature and cast doubt on the points made by the passage.
- The emperor Claudius of Rome ruled an empire spanning three continents between 41 and 54 CE. His reign was of massive importance to the history of ancient European civilization. In fact, the emperor was among the most innovative, fair, and wise in all Rom 85
- Some parents forbid young children from owning smart phones (cell phones with Internet access), while others disagree and believe that they are important tools for keeping in touch. Which point of view do you think is better, and why? 70
