Essay topics:

At the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago, there was a mass-extinction event that caused the extinction of more than half of all living species.

As the reading mentions, at the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago, a mass-extinction event eliminated too many of the living species. Still, the cause of this massive extinction is not uncovered. The writer elaborates on several possible explanations for this phenomenon. However, the professor states that these explanations may be plausible, but they are not strongly supported to cause the mass extinction.
The first theory declares that the decline of sea levels causes the habitats in the shallow areas to be destroyed and profoundly affects food chains worldwide. The speaker rebuts this idea and elaborates that the habitats in coastal areas are very adoptive; on the other hand, the slow change of sea levels could not cause massive destruction only if the change of sea level was so sudden.
The second idea states that massive climate cooling could have devastated many species. However, the lecturer explains that although SO2 could cause climate cooling, it is unlikely to be the cause of extinction. Because this phenomenon happened in a short amount of time, yet the traces of SO2 is still in the atmosphere.
The last theory involves an asteroid strike that collided with the earth. The displaced debris is thrown up into the atmosphere, where it can block out sunlight for enough amount of time to eradicate many of the species. In contrast, the professor states that an enormous asteroid must have left behind a crater, but no such thing was found that happened in that period.
