The reading and the lecture are both about saving the endangered species from extinction and they discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this effort. The author of the article believes that this huge amount of concern about endangered species is unnatural and has many drawbacks. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks the extinction of endangered species should be prevented and the loss of every single specie may have a lot of consequences.
First of all, the author points out that it has been exaggerated that the extinction of any animal leads to ecological disaster. It is mentioned that in the past many extiction has occurred, such as dinosaurs, and this, results no lasting harm on life on earth. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says although the extinction of dinosaurs causes no harm, it may shifts the organism dominancy by time. Furthermore he argues that we, the human, are dominating organism, but loss of even one specie may alter the predominancy and would be a threat to us.
Secondly, the author contends that with the advent of new technologies, there is no need to be dependant on nature to obtain new medicine. The article notes that nowadays, with genetic engineering the disease can be healed much more than before and the extinction of animals harms the medical progress no more. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests even now the nature plays a significant role in medicine progress. He elaborates on this by mentioning that today about 40 percent of prescription drugs are based on plants and by extinction of about 100 speceis per day, the opportuinity for researchers to make new medicine out of these species would be lost forever
Finally, the author states that the saving of a species from extinction would have a huge cost. The article establishes that instead of spending a lot of money on endangered speceis, they can invest on more urgent issues. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that saving animals from extinction may even have a lot of econimical advantages. He brings an example of fresh water muscle and contends that by saving this specie 10 thousands jobs would be created and also 700,000 dollars may be saved. Therefore the endangered species should be saved even just for its financial benefits.
