TPO-22 - Integrated Writing Task Ethanol fuel, made from plants such as corn and sugar cane, has been advocated by some people as an alternative to gasoline in the United States. However, many critics argue that ethanol is not a good replacement for gasoline

The lecture and the reading are both about the use of Ethanol, which is fabricated by the use of some plants, as a replacement fuel rather than gasoline. The author of the reading believes that many critics are against the replacement of Ethanol for gasoline. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks that actually the Ethanol is good alternative for gasoline and the provided reasons are not convincing at all.

First of all, the article points out that the Ethanol can not solve the global warming problem. It is mentioned that like gasoline, Ethanol produces carbon dioxide which traps the heat in the atmosphere, causes global warming. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says Ethanol do not add to global warming. Furthermore He argues that as the article mentiones, Ethanol is made with plants, and the process of growing plants, contradicrs to global warming.

Secondly, the author of the article contends that the use of Ethanol, reduces the amount of plants which are meant to be consumed by animals. The article notes that much of corn grow now in US is used to feed farm animals and when it should be produced to serve as a fuel, a significant source of food for animals would disappear. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggest Ethanol is produced using Cellulose. He adds most of Cellulose in parts of a plant is not eaten by animals, hence there would be no reduction of plants.

Finally, The author states that Ethanol can not compete with the gasoline on price. The article establishes that although the price of these two substances are rather equal now, but the government is paying subsidies to the ethanol producers to keep the price low. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that Ethanol can compete with the gasoline on price in the future. He puts forth to the idea that this governmental support would not be needed in the future because of the consequent increased production of ethanol. He says that generally increasing in the production, leads to the reduction of prices.
