Extinction of dinosaurs

Essay topics:

Extinction of dinosaurs

Both the reading and the lecture discuss the cause of the extinction of dinosaurs. In this set of materials, the writer strongly postulates that dinosaurs are the strongest animals that could have undergone extinction without any reason and provides three theories to endorse its idea. On the other hand, the professor states there is no evidence to support these hypotheses and gainsays each of them.

First and foremost, the passage begins by asserting the asteroid theory which explains the discovery of Iridium, an element that mostly occurred in meteorites. According to this theory, an asteroid hits the Earth which caused all dinosaurs to be dead. However, the speaker states that iridium is not only present in meteorites but also in the Earth. In fact, it is present in rich quantity in the Earth core and it could have leaked through the core by the volcanic eruptions and the earthquakes. Hence, the theory of cosmic collision is not reliable.

Secondly, the professor further discusses the details about the ice age theory mentioned in the reading. He asserts that at the time when dinosaurs were alive, the weather was hot and humid. Also, there is no proof of happening of the glacial period in documents. Moreover, many tropical species were present at that time. Not only the carbon dioxide level was same as that of today but also the sea level was high which explains the melting of glaciers. These claims refute the author's implication of the ice age theory which states that dinosaurs could not tolerate the harsh cold environment due to the glacial period that happened at that time.

Ultimately, the article wraps its argument by declaring the bird's evolution theory which explains that dinosaurs get evolved into modern birds. Their body structure and anatomical features are similar to that of extinct species of dinosaurs. In contrast, the professor refutes this hypothesis by showing the inaccuracy of the author that contemporary birds could be ancestors of dinosaurs but their ability to move and fly, dodge objects, and changing direction while flying is different as compare to the movement of dinosaurs. They are not evolved.
