Both the reading passage and the speaker's lecture discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the franchise. While the author enumerates three possible benefits: reliable supplier, lower costs and higher security, the lecturer, however, is not on the same wavelength with the author for several reasons.
First of all, the professor begins by pointing out that the franchise companies would force their contractors to purchase some specific products that is overpriced. That is to say, the franchise companies do not allow the contractors to buy the same products through other channels even if they are cheaper. This idea turns its back on the article counterpart, which states that the contractors do not need to take risk to seek for suppliers since the franchise companies already have found feasible suppliers.
Second, the speaker goes on to talk about that the franchise companies would charge thirty percentage of advertisement costs from the contractors. Only when the franchise companies do advertise the contractors' company do they return the fees. To further elaborate, the franchise companies just promote their own brands instead of the franchise owners. Such an idea also gives a counter evidence mentioned in the article, which considers that the franchise owners could save money from advertising because the parent company already paid the costly advertising.
As a final point, the lecturer concludes by contending that according to a study, purchasing an already existing independent business have twice as much chance of success during the first four years as franchises. Accordingly, this point of vies also casts doubts on the contents of the article, which indicates that buying a franchise is much safer than starting a new business.
In summary, owing to the reasons given by the speaker above, she does not find the arguments in the reading passage convincing.
