The reading and the lecture are both about the pros and cons of buying a franchise instead of running an independent business. Secondly, the writer claims that the company can save its money because it does not need to spend money on expensive advertising. The writer mentions that the original company is in charge of advertisement expenses. Besides, the company will benefit from the already popularity and fame of the original brand. Conversely, the speaker rebuts this claim by explaining that this strategy is not advantageous for companies since they should pay 6 percent of their total income to the original company that is a large number of their money. Moreover, he points out that the company is just advertising its brand not the company's so it has little benefit for the company.
Finally, the author believes that franchising is more secure than establishing a new independent business in today's competitive world.
In this vein, the professor disagrees with this idea and clarifies that franchising is not the most secure option for investment. He adds it is true that franchising has less chance of failure in comparison with starting a new business but it is much better to buy a business from its previous owner. Indeed, this is a safer choice compared to establishing a new business.
