The hypotheses about the decline of cedar tree

Essay topics:

The hypotheses about the decline of cedar tree

The article discuses about the hypotheses explaining the cause of the decline of yellow cedar, a species of tree in northwestern North America. In the article three hypotheses have been demonstrated but the lecture contradicts each of them and believes that none of them are responsible for this decreasing.

First hypotheses, attributes the decline to insects, specifically cedar bark beetle. The professor in the lecture denies this idea and states that these trees are even more resistance to bettles than others. These trees are saturated by chemicals that are assumed as a poison for insects. According to him, bettles attack already sick trees.

Another reason is believed to be the brown bears in that area according to the article. In the lecture it is mentioned that these trees are scattered all over that area, the mainland and the islands. The professor claims that there exist no bears on the islands, however, the trees there also being declined.

The last hypotheses suggested in the passage blames the gradual climate change to be responsible. Nevertheless, in the lecture, is claimed that these trees could be found at higher and also lower elevations, thus, cooler and warmer temperatures. The tree's population in the warmer regions is observed to be more rapidly decreasing rather than to cooler area.

In the lecture, the professor criticizes each of these hypotheses and partially accept each but he believes that none of them can be the main reason for this happening.
