The strange sound of "quackers" heard by Russian submarines has always been a unknown phenomenon. There are some theories that tried to answer the questions as given in the passage, but the lecturer argues about those suggestions with some explanation.

First, there are many studies about Orca whales and those studies suggest that they live in the surface of ocean in stead of deep part. As military submarines often cruise in the deep water, it is quite not possible that the sailors would pick up sound from the surface of ocean that cause by these Orca whales that are far from where the subs is.

Second, though there are not many detailed studies about giant squids, it is also not plausible that the sound of "quackers" are from these animals. The reason is that the date that have been report by the Russian submarine sailors of the hearing of the sound begins from 1960, and then discontinue after 1980. However, the giant squid live in that area ever since and still exist now. That would make the hypothesis which think that sound is from the squids not convincible as the sudden disappear of reporting.

Third, it is not possible that the sound is generate by other foreign submarines. As in the description from the Russia data, the sound seems to move around the submarine and moved very quick which is not a possible act for another subs. And the possible noise source from other submarine are usually cause by engine, which is not any similar to the sound pattern as "quacker". So it is unlikely that the strange sound is coming from foreign submarines.
