Integrated WritingPrivate collectors have been selling and buying fossils the petrified remains of ancient organisms ever since the eighteenth century In recent years however the sale of fossils particularly of dinosaurs and other large vertebrates

Both the reading passage and the lecturer are discussing the consequences of selling and buying fossil by private collectors. The reading passage asserts that private market of fossils is an unfortuante event for scientists and the public. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that the negative aspects of the private sale is greatly exaggerated. She offers several reasons for her opinion.

To begin with, the reading claims that private collectors do not allow public view of their collections and the public is not able to see the fossils and due to this, people will lose interest in fossils. The lecturer rebuts this claim and she states that private sale of fossils will result in more exposure of the public to these fossils. Because many public places like libraries and schools will be able to buy these fossils and the museum will no longer be the only place for viewing the fossils.

Secondly, the reading argues that scientists will miss out on some of the important discoveries because the private collectors buy these fossils and due to the limitation of budget, scientists cannot compete in buying these fossils. The lecturer challenges this idea by mentioning that before anyone can set a price on a fossil, first it should be identified, and scientists are the ones who do the tests and exams on fossils. So they will be able to examine these fossils and they will not miss out much.

Finally, the author posits that private collectors destroy some of the related information about the fossils that they discover, and some of the data will be lost. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that if it was not for the private collectors, many fossils would remain undiscovered. This is because universities are not running so much fossil discoveries. So it is better to lose some data about a fossil rather than not discovering it at all.
