Many countries require cigarette smokers to pay particularly high taxes on their purchases of cigarettes; similar taxes are being considered for unhealthy foods. The policy of imposing high taxes on cigarettes and other unhealthy products has a number of

The reading passage and the lecture both discuss the advantages and disadvantages of implementing taxes on cigarettes and unhealthy food products. The author claims that adding taxes discourages people from smoking. However, the lecturer casts doubt on these claims and asserts that adding taxes would not forbid people from smoking.

First, the author suggests that adding taxes would discourage people from smoking because of the high price.. In contrast, the speaker argues that people will not be discouraged to buy the product. Instead they will buy the cheaper unhealthy product. According to the lecturer this cheaper product is even more harmful to their health.

Second, according to the reading adding taxes provide money to treat smokers of different diseases. The speaker find this point debatable. He bolsters his opinion by saying that it is true that non smoker should not cover the cost of treating smokers. However, it is also unfair to charge the same amount of money for a pack of cigarettes to a rich and a poor person. Therefore, adding taxes provide an unfair equation.

Lastly, the lecturer contradicts the fallacy of the passage that adding taxes provide more money for the government to spend on public welfare. He contends by saying that government should not depend on this income as a continuous source, since they would adopt softer policies against smoking in public places. Furthermore, any decrease in demand means less revenues. As a result, the government would suffer of deficits due to the reduced income
