otters

Essay topics:

otters

The lecturer, as well as the reading, are about some hypothesis would explain why populations of sea otter have declined on the western coast of North America. The reading states that there are two main reasons where the pollution is the more likely of the two. In contrast to the reading, the professor suggests that sea otters attacked by predators are the main reason for declining. The lecturer supports her argument by providing three reasons.

First of all, the reading claims that there are areas where levels of chemicals have increased, and also sea otter’s populations have decreased. Thus, there is a certain relation between these events. However, the professor refutes this point. She says that nobody has found a death sea otter and, therefore, it is a weak argument. She mentions that as nobody has found a sample of this death mammal. It just do to highlight the hypothesis that the attack by predators is the main motive.

Second, according to the reading, pollution affected populations of other mammals like seals and sea lions. Nevertheless, the lecturer disputes this argument. She argues that populations of seals and sea lions have declined because orcas could have changed its diet since there is a lack of their preferred food. She points out that humans have been hunting other whales that it could be the main diet of Orcas.

Finally, the reading states that ocean currents may have changed concentrations of populations in different areas. Hence it caused a variation on populations of otters among some areas as in some areas. We can find a stable population of otters. Nonetheless, the lecturer believes that in areas where Orcas cannot access to eat, like shallow and rocky areas, populations of sea otters remain constant.
